A Q&A with Nicola J Rowley the Author of Mug the Wumph the Dancing Wizard

When did you start writing Mug the Wumph the Dancing Wizard?

I began writing the book in July 2017, after I’d finished a contract working for BBC Studios in London. My dad had died the previous November, and this seemed the most fitting way for me to honour him and celebrate his life. It has been a long journey to reach this stage with the book as I have also started a successful Communications Agency in between edits, hence why this has taken longer than I would have hoped to complete.

Who do you think would like to read this book?

This story is for any child or adult for that matter, who loves to dream about the endless possibilities available to us. I’m a firm believer that there are no limitations in life, only the ones we place on ourselves. As the saying goes, if you can dream it, you can achieve it and this really is true if you take consistent action towards each and every one of your goals.

Why is Mug the Wumph a wizard?

I can’t answer that one. It was my dad who created the character when I was just nine. I just remember the magic I felt when he told me the stories over the space of that week or two weeks. I was entranced. There was a wizard character and he’d been created just for me. It was incredibly special.

Why did your dad not write the book?

I did try my best to get him to do so. I begged him to write it down, and somewhere, I still have a sample of what he came up with several years later. But somehow it had lost that previous spell-binding magic. I also think that sometimes other people enable you to fulfil your destiny, and their gift is just giving you that starting point from which you can begin.

Why is Mug the Wumph a Dancing Wizard?

My son is now five, but when he was two, I was asking him what he thought would make a wizard in a book special and he said if they could dance. It’s as simple as that. I brainstormed with my then two-year-old son and he came up trumps!

Do Cupro Blue and The Concur Bird exist in real life?

The Concur Bird not so much, but Cupro Blue is actually part of the pedigree name for our former family cat, which I grew up with. Blue Burmese cats are incredibly special and are most dog-like in the way they approach things. They also tend to live to a ripe old age. Ours was 19! And yes, he did save myself and my brother from being lost in the woods when we were much younger just as the story unfolds in the story itself.

What should we know about you as an Author?

I’ve worked in the media for the last 25 years, first as a Journalist and now in Communications. This is my third children’s book and I’m also in the process of writing another non-fiction book for working mums, as I’m also the Founder of the Working Mum Association.
